Quick verdict: Choose BGS for pristine high-end modern cards where subgrades add value — or when chasing the Black Label. For pure resale of a card that can gem, PSA's 10 premium usually wins.

Subgrades — Beckett's whole identity

Every BGS label prints four subgrades: centering, corners, edges, surface. The final grade derives from them, and collectors pay premiums for clean subgrade lines. A BGS 9.5 with a 10 centering subgrade sells differently from one with a 9 — the label tells the story.

The Black Label

All four subgrades at 10 = Black Label Pristine 10 — dramatically rarer than a PSA 10 and priced accordingly. It's the one scenario where a Beckett slab reliably outsells the PSA equivalent.

The trade-off: a regular BGS 9.5 (their Gem Mint) typically sells below a PSA 10 of the same card, which is why flippers often cross their best BGS cards over to PSA. Check your card's centering first with the centering tool — 50/50 is the Black Label bar.

  • Measure centering. Worse than 55/45 and the Gem Mint is gone before anyone looks at corners.
  • Run the grading math. Fee, shipping, selling costs and honest odds — know the expected value before paying.

FAQ

How much does Beckett grading cost?
BGS Economy runs $20 per card with subgrades included as of August 2026; standard and faster tiers scale up from $25. Shipping both ways is extra.
What is a BGS Black Label?
A BGS 10 where all four subgrades — centering, corners, edges, surface — are also 10. It's far rarer than a PSA 10 and commands enormous premiums.
Is BGS 9.5 the same as PSA 10?
They're both called Gem Mint, but the market disagrees: a PSA 10 usually sells higher than a BGS 9.5 of the same card. BGS wins when subgrades are clean or the card black-labels.
